Book Spotlight: Untangled by Dr. Lisa Damour
If raising a teenage girl ever feels like trying to solve a puzzle while riding a roller coaster (while everything is on fire), you aren't alone. In Untangled: Guiding Teenage Girls Through the Seven Transitions into Adulthood, clinical psychologist Dr. Lisa Damour provides a clear, compassionate roadmap to understanding adolescent development.
This is one of my favorite parenting books and one that I plan on going back to and re-reading as my own daughters navigate these seven steps.
Instead of viewing teen behavior as irrational chaos, unpredictable mood swings, or just plain madness, Dr. Damour breaks down adolescence into 7 distinct developmental transitions, roughly spanning from age 11 through early adulthood (ages 11–19+):
Parting with Childhood (~Ages 11–12): Pushing away from parents and childlike things to forge autonomy.
Joining a Tribe (~Ages 12–14): Shift from family-first to finding a peer group and navigating social dynamics.
Harnessing Emotions (~Ages 12–15): Learning to regulate intense, rapidly shifting feelings and brain development.
Contending with Adult Authority (~Ages 13–16): Testing boundaries, debating rules, and practicing abstract reasoning.
Planning for the Future (~Ages 14–17): Balancing high aspirations, school pressures, and real-world expectations.
Entering the Romantic World (~Ages 14–18): Navigating crushes, relationships, attraction, and emotional vulnerability.
Caring for Herself (~Ages 16–19+): Building true independence around sleep, mental health, daily tasks, and self-care.
Why I Recommend It
Normalizes the Chaos: Helps parents distinguish between typical teen development and behavior that may require professional support.
Actionable Advice: Provides concrete scripts and boundary-setting tactics you can put to work immediately.
Empathetic Lens: Validates both the parent’s struggle and the adolescent’s internal pressure.
Need Support Navigating These Transitions?
While Untangled offers a fantastic framework, putting these strategies into practice in real life can still feel overwhelming. If you or your child/teen are feeling stuck, anxious, or disconnected during any of these 7 transitions, you don't have to navigate it by yourself.
I am here to help. Whether your child or teen needs a safe space to process their feelings, or you're a mother seeking guidance on parenting through a challenging phase, reach out today to schedule a consultation.
